HARNESSING THE POWER OF SUGGESTION SCHEMES TO IMPROVE WORKPLACE SAFETY Ensuring safety of employees at work requires more than mere compliance with the relevant law, i.e. the Factories and Machinery Act 1959 and the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994. Safety programmes, especially in hazardous work environments, need constant effort, sweat and sometimes tears by those responsible for their implementation. Policing the workforce to make sure they work in accordance with safety rules established for their protection is a thankless task. You might think that there should be no need for employers to impose strict safety rules on employees; rather employees should be the ones insisting that employers provide machinery which is safe to use and plant which is free of dangerous substances. In some countries, the trade unions are sufficiently strong that if a workplace operation is considered unsafe or unhealthy by the employees’ union representative, workers will be ordered by the union not to carry out any work until the management has rectified the matter. |
